Less than two months after studies suggesting myriad changes to improve safety on East North Avenue, another study is underway to make Brady Street more pedestrian and business friendly am.
The area in question covers two blocks toward the eastern end of the street between North Warren Avenue and North Franklin Place, from Compari Taqueria to Kudova as the restaurant’s landmark. The study could lead to pedestrian-only traffic on that hectic section, including the scene of a fatal hit-and-run last September.
The Brady Street Business Improvement District (BID) Commission hired the same two companies that conducted the North Avenue study: engineering specialists Graef USA Inc. and architecture group TKWA UrbanLab. Before that, one of the proposals included converting half a block of East He Ivanhoe Place in front of the Crossroads Collective into a pedestrian plaza.
A similar fate is likely for the 2-block section of Brady Street, but the situation is more complicated than for its East Side brethren. These include Milwaukee County Transit System buses that use the corridor and the general rerouting of traffic to and from Farwell and Prospect Avenues.
Brady Street BID Executive Director Rachel Taylor told the Journal Sentinel This research could be completed by late spring. Changes must then be approved by the city authorities.
