Bow Wow wants hip hop to unite.
The 35-year-old rapper has called on his fellow musicians to come along with a “commission” similar to the National Basketball Association (NBA) and its union, the Players Association.
On Twitter he wrote:
He also suggested that potential associations could even assist with retirement plans to help older stars transition into the next phase of their lives.
He added:
The idea received some backing from long-running hip-hop festival Rock The Bells.
The organizers tweeted, “Our hip hop hero deserves better. That’s why we started Rock the Bells.
“Almost five years later, we are still rewarded for experiences like Rock the Bells Cruises and Rock the Bells Festivals, licensed merchandise deals, brand partnerships, and more. We ride for heroes.
“Their legacy is our legacy. Without them we wouldn’t be there. There would be no hip-hop.”
Bow Wow isn’t the first rapper to seek out such a body: the Hip-Hop Alliance union was launched last year by Public Enemy frontmen Chuck D, Kurtis Blow, and KRS-One.
In a post announcing the organization, KRS-One wrote:
“How much do we pay for what we do within ‘hip-hop’ as an industry? Who speaks for us? What brings dignity and respect to our work?
“Answer: The Hip-Hop Alliance! With knowledge, skill and the power of the collective voice, there is no reason why you can’t protect yourself and your future!”
