Milwaukee — People from all over Wisconsin flock to Milwaukee’s shores in search of mandarin ducks.

Cathay Bush is an avid bird watcher and was lucky enough to see a mandarin duck earlier this month.
“I haven’t seen it except Wednesday. I just saw it on Wednesday,” Bush said. “Mandarin ducks are related to wood ducks, who are also very cute ducks.”
Mandarin ducks are native to East Asia and are common in South Korea, eastern Russia, China, Taiwan, and Japan. Since he is 6,869 miles between China and Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources believes this mandarin duck was once a pet.
Hundreds of bird watchers flock the shores of Lake Michigan in search of ducks, but not all are as lucky as Bush.
“I’ve been chasing it here from Fond du Lac for the last month or so,” said birdwatcher Ed Welk.
Welk believes the birds often migrate to and from the fond du lac, but they can’t seem to track them down.
“There are a few spots we stopped on the way back, so let’s head to Frame Park in Waukesha and other stops on the way back and see what we can find,” Welk said.

On Wednesday, Bush said a friend of hers was robbed at gunpoint while searching for mandarin ducks.
“He stopped, jumped out, took an assault rifle and asked for equipment, which the photographer wouldn’t hand over,” Bush said.
The St. Francis Police Department has responded to the incident and said it is now looking for the perpetrator.
“I’m not worried because it was isolated, but you have to be careful when parking somewhere,” Bush said.
