A new report from Bleeping Computer reveals a rise in “pig slaughter” scams. You should be aware of crypto-fraud apps that have made their way into both the Play Store and the App Store.
App Store Crypto App Uses “Slaughter of Pigs” Technique to Scam People
Now, the “pig slaughter” scam is perhaps the lesser known one. This is a scam involving fake websites, malicious advertisements, etc.
According to Sophos, these attacks are designed to trick male Facebook or Tinder users into installing fraudulent apps. They do so using fake female profiles containing stolen images. It goes without saying that such fake profiles are meant to present themselves in the best possible way. They usually present people with investment opportunities, but of course this is a scam.
Users are further scammed when they install such apps (usually cryptocurrency apps). The fake profile encourages the user to deposit crypto using legitimate cryptocurrency apps such as her Binance.
Sophos highlighted three such apps
Sophos highlighted three apps that work in such a manner. “Ace Pro” and “MBM_BitScan” apps from the App Store and “BitScan” from the Play Store. Users are usually lured to withdraw small amounts from their accounts first, but when users try to withdraw larger amounts… well, they can’t.
These apps are usually perfectly legal once they’re registered in the app stores. However, once approved, it changes the domain name and connects to a malicious server.
Now, this is a very elaborate scheme that can be avoided using common sense. Don’t be fooled by fake profiles and get involved in fake investments. It’s not that way.
Be careful when installing unknown apps in general. Not to mention when taking advice from complete strangers. There are many scams out there, but this one is not particularly easy to fall victim to.
