Burton County’s 3rd Annual Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge is now open and looking for more contestants and business mentors. Her students in grades 7-12 in Burton County have until February 22nd to submit business ideas and concepts to take home cash. Sponsored by Great Bend Economic Development and the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, the competition was created to challenge young people, encourage the business community to partner with and mentor the younger generation, and foster entrepreneurship, and is sponsored by Network Kansas. is a partnership with Network Kansas hosts regional and state Youth Entrepreneurship Challenges as part of its mission to develop an entrepreneurial ecosystem across Kansas. A partnership with Network Kansas will allow YEC contestants to use his VentureDash, a contestant portal. Great Bend Economic Development and the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce are tasked with strengthening the local workforce for the benefit of the business community, and in this case it means developing the next generation of entrepreneurs. The competition and live trade show will take place on March 8th at the Great Bend Event Center. The student will also give a formal four-minute presentation of her to the judges. The judging panel is made up of a wide range of business professionals.
Invite the general public to attend this event to cheer on your student competitors and show your support for the next generation of business ideas. The student learns how to write an executive statement and the key things to share in a 4-minute presentation, but she’s also learning some soft skills to help her navigate life at work. A significant side effect of this competition is that student participants gain professional networking experience with judges, mentors, and the community, as well as build their social capital.
Winners will be announced after the exhibition portion of the event. A $2,500 cash prize will be split among the top entrants. 3rd place wins $500, 2nd place wins $750, 1st place wins $1,000, and a chance to advance to state-level competition. Spectators will have the chance to vote for their favorite player and award one competitor her $250.
How students participate
The finale of the competition will take place approximately three months later, so participants are encouraged to start their business plans. Students interested in participating in the competition can find out more about her YEC on her Great Bend Economic Development Inc. web page (www.gbedinc.com/yec). This page includes sample business plans, links to resources on presentations, and some interviews with 2022 contestants. Also, students can enter the competition using a link to her VentureDash contestant portal. When students enter the competition, students are paired with a business her mentor who helps them work out details, ask questions, and fine-tune their business plans and presentations.
How to join the community
The community can help in several ways, such as sponsoring live events or providing business mentors for students. Depending on the level of sponsorship, sponsors may speak with contestants and the community before the winners are announced at the live event and/or logos appear on all marketing materials. A business mentor will match the student and help her with a business plan and a 4-minute presentation.
