BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) — Many streets in Bakersfield have been flooded by recent rains, forcing drivers to walk over flooded roads and wondering if the infrastructure will be adequate for heavy rains. Some people are.
Bryanna Aguilara, who works at Bakersfield Sports Cards, says that the streets around the store can become flooded very easily when it rains.
“I have to park far away and I’m afraid people will hit me,” Aguilara said. “It’s inconvenient to park your car over there and walk around all the way to avoid falling into a puddle.”
According to Aguilara, this is also not a recent development.
“Last winter was about the same. We didn’t get as much rain as last year, so it wasn’t that bad, but floods are always here,” Flood Responsibility.
The City of Bakersfield says its drainage system was at capacity when the rains hit their peak.
“I think yesterday (Monday) we had record rain in our area, so our system was at capacity for about two hours yesterday afternoon or evening. “We are confirming that the debris has been removed,” said Joe Conroy, a spokesman for the city of Bakersfield.
Conroy said caution was being exercised in areas that were still flooded and the crew was working to clear the clogged drain, which caused the backup, Conroy said. increase.
“We have workers using vacuum trucks to remove any water that may have accumulated in the area,” Conroy said.
Aguilara said the flooded area by her workplace is a safety hazard for people trying to park.
“If you think about it, you can’t really jump that far. If you’re not wearing waterproof shoes, you’ll have to walk inconveniently,” Aguilara said.
The City of Bakersfield recommends driving with caution when the roads are wet and adjusting your speed for road conditions rather than simply relying on the speed limit.
