Madison, Wisconsin (AP) — After spending the past two seasons as defensive coordinator on Luke Fickel’s Cincinnati staff, Mike Tressel is following him to Wisconsin.
Wisconsin announced Tuesday the hiring of Tressel as defensive coordinator/inside linebacker coach and Phil Longo as offensive coordinator/quarterback coach. Longo, who has been North Carolina’s offensive coordinator for the past four seasons, said last month that he would join the Wisconsin staff in the same role.
“I am very excited about the addition of Phil and Mike to our players and our program,” Fickel said Tuesday in a statement released by the university. and I’m happy to finally be working with him. He’s a very innovative and balanced football coach. He’s a great person, family oriented and player oriented. I really care.
“I have known Mike for 20 years and he is a great coach and person. He has incredible experience, including a great background in the Big Ten. “I have been very fortunate to have both Phil and Mike on staff, and have been impressed with his ability to adapt as a coach on the field and to the culture of the program.”
In Tressel’s first year as Cincinnati’s defensive coordinator, the Bearcats reached the College Football playoffs and ranked fifth nationally in scoring defensively. Cincinnati allowed 4.5 yards per play, which was his fourth-lowest average among any Football Bowl subdivision team.
This season, Cincinnati ranks 20th in scoring defense. The Bearcats gave him 4.61 yards per play. This is his 6th lowest average among the FBS teams.
Tressel served on the staff of Michigan State University from 2007-2020 and served as defensive coordinator in 2018 and 2019.
“I am very excited to join the Wisconsin football family and look forward to continuing the tradition of elite defense here in Madison,” Tressel said in a statement. , it’s great to be back in the Big Ten.I’m really looking forward to working with some amazing young people here who have already shown me a great work ethic, intelligence and competence.”
Wisconsin named Fickel’s coach on Nov. 27, a day after the Badgers finished the regular season 6-6 in a 23-16 loss to Minnesota. Fickel will join the Wisconsin side alongside interim head coach Jim Leonhardt, who is not part of the Badgers’ 2023 staff, for a guaranteed 24-17 Rate Bowl win over Oklahoma State on December 27.
