MIDLAND, TX (KOSA) – Superstition holds that Friday the 13th is the most unlucky day of the year.
But for companies like Uprock Midland, the day is a lucky day to win new customers.
Sonny Aguilar has owned ‘Uprock’ for 23 years. It’s an eclectic setup of skateboards, smoking paraphernalia and incense.
“I took everything I was interested in and loved growing up and mashed it together,” Aguilar said.
But for the most part, “uplocks” work with tattoos.
“I’ve seen it all, I’ve done it all,” said Aguilar. “Tattoos aren’t crazy for me anymore.”
The art of tattooing changed during his ownership of ‘Uprock’.
“In the old days, I would always practice on myself, grapefruit, or pig skin,” he said.
But some things never change, like Friday the 13th being one of the busiest days of the year.
“It’s definitely one of those,” said Aguilar. “surely.”
Aguilar said Friday’s 13th tattoo deal included the number ’13’ tattooed anywhere on his body. However, he says that in recent years the store has switched to offering smaller tattoo deals.
The deal works, as patron Courtney Hurd can attest.
“We’re going to have the moon on our shoulders,” Hurd explained.
Aguilar’s connection to Friday the 13th extends beyond business. He was born on Friday, October 13th.
“I always thought Friday the 13th was my lucky day. It’s always been my lucky day.”
So maybe everyone else has it wrong. Or maybe luck is just another name for what you earn.
“I’m 23,” Aguilar said. “23 years old”
