WHYFARM CEO Alpha Sennon continues to pave the way for young people in agriculture.
The Siparian native was recently recognized as a leading social entrepreneur by US-based organization Ashoka.
Ashoka is in the business of building and nurturing communities of young change makers and organizations in over 95 countries.
Senon, the first and only Ashoka Fellow from Trinidad and Tobago, is one of 24 Fellows featured in the organization’s latest publication, Leading Social Entrepreneurs.
The founders of WHYFARM believe that young people are the key to innovating agriculture and sustainably feeding the world.
“Young people need to become agripreneurs,” he said.
He continues: We need to get them involved to ensure we have farmers to feed our people in the future.
It takes a lot of strong marketing to make it attractive and we call it “agriKOOLture”. This shows young people that they can find a future in the food value chain. ”
Sennon said he was very honored to be recognized by Ashoka, and it was great to see that he could inspire other young entrepreneurs to create their own space in agriculture. He added that it was a big achievement.
“I want to be a role model for how social entrepreneurship organizations and projects are built.
I want more young people to become social entrepreneurs so that they can come up with creative solutions to the problems we see in today’s society,” he said.
WHYFARM communicates the value of farming to children through the Agriman comic series. Agriman is the world’s first agricultural superhero who heroically solves agricultural problems and fights food insecurity.
WHYFARM uses Agriman characters to host live shows at schools and community events, telling real-life stories of farming adventures.
While Agriman is aimed at younger children, WhyFarm offers an “Agripreneurship” program with how-to training, curriculum and mentorship for college, graduate school and beyond. . The curriculum has been adopted internationally.
Sennon’s work has been recognized with many international awards, including the Misk Global Challenge Awards sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Alpha was a speaker at TEDXAmsterdam in 2017 and was named 2019 Influencer of the Year by the Ministry of Sport and Youth Development. He was appointed Director of the National Agricultural Marketing and Development Corporation (NAMDEVCO) where he currently works.
