The Apprentice has been criticized by leading black entrepreneurial groups for “erasing” black and dark-skinned women from popular BBC programming.
The group, who were successful contestants in Season 17’s Dragon’s Den, wondered why dark-skinned women were being “erased” from the show.
The duo of Natalie Duvall and Alison Burton have secured a £50,000 investment from Deborah Meaden and Peter Jones for their business March Mews in 2022.
They suggested that black and dark-skinned women were underrepresented on British television and that this was unacceptable.
The last time a dark-skinned woman appeared on The Apprentice was in 2017, after Joanna Jarjue reached Week 12 in 2017.
In an Instagram post, the two said they were “sad” to see this year’s line-up.
They said: ‘Why are black female entrepreneurs being crossed out in shows like this? More specifically…dark-skinned representation? Where are they? What happened with @apprenticeuk?
“Yes, I know it’s just a TV show…but it has power.Why can’t we be a part of it?So many young people watch these shows. and cannot become invisible.”
They point out that they know “hundreds of amazing black female entrepreneurs who have succeeded without a show like this,” adding, “You don’t have to fight to be seen.
“We need equity, investments and board participation.
“@apprenticeuk 2023 is just a clear example of what happens all the time in the corporate world: black women erased!
“As gatekeeper @bbc needs to do a better job.”
This year’s Apprentice season featured contestants of black and mixed race, including Birmingham senior sales rep Simba Luwanbiwa and Bedfordshire business owner Rochelle Anthony.
In an interview with The Voice, Burton said he believes the BBC needs to be proactive and “make sure they tick the diversity boxes properly”.
“With black women, I feel like they use the BAME approach, a term I absolutely hate.
“But when they use BAME, they can get away with throwing a melting pot of people and ticking that diversity box. No.” A woman checking a box. ”
Burton also added, “For men, the darker the berry, the sweeter the juice, because they’re basically a fetish and an idris, so it doesn’t matter what color they are.”
“But for women, we always have to be the European beauty standard of what they want: an exotic look like Kim Kardashian, and much more.”
