For many businesses, the pandemic remains something that needs recovery.
The City of Antioquia is providing support to local businesses struggling to get back on their feet.
Kirkland Smith is the owner of Solid Rock Café in Antioch. Like many restaurants during the pandemic, the closures due to the COVID surge took a toll on Smith’s Business’ bottom line.
COVID mandates are in the past, but business revenues are still down compared to pre-pandemic.
“Our revenue was probably down about 50% at the top and is down about 30% now,” says Smith.
Smith wasn’t forced to close his business like his colleagues. He’s cut hours to keep costs down and is paying off outstanding bills that were postponed during the pandemic.
“We are currently paying two bills, an old payment and a new payment,” says Smith.
However, some easing may be on the way for some business owners.
“We are here in February 2023, and some of our businesses are still feeling the financial pinch of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thorpe announced Wednesday that local businesses still struggling financially due to the pandemic can apply for grants of up to $15,000. .
It is funded by the US Relief Plans Act for a total of $1 million.
Kwame Reid, the city’s Director of Economic Development who oversees the program, explained how eligible applicants can use the grant.
“These funds can be used for overhead costs, rent relief, utility bill payments, and for businesses looking to regain a foothold. Assistance would go a long way,” he said.
