Express Yourself Milwaukee – Nonprofit founded in 2003 to provide at-risk Milwaukee youth with the tools they need to express themselves – Annual Showcase Performance Thursday, May 17 at 6pm 30 minutes at Miller High Life Theatre, 500 W. Kilbourn. Avenue.
Special guests at this year’s performance include Speech, co-founder of Grammy-winning hip-hop group Arrested Development. Cammy Griffin, a dancer who recently toured Australia with the Lost and Found Orchestra, is about to travel to China for her production of ‘Stomp’. Dancer Justin Miles recently starred in the Off-Broadway production of ‘Tap Dogs’ and toured with ‘Stomp’. Hip-hop artist from Milwaukee, Classic.
“Express Yourself Milwaukee is about restoring creativity and confidence to young people,” said Klassik. “It aligns perfectly with my mission as an artist: I can use my platform and my talent to inspire others, especially young people, to live life with passion.” EXYO is doing just that.”
This year, 150 youth performers (plus 30 adult artists and musicians) took part in the show, called “MOVE IT!”. – At Express Yourself, she is a member of a year-long interdisciplinary arts program that incorporates music, spoken word, visual arts and dance.
“We chose the MOVE IT! theme because this year Express Yourself (EXYOMKE) moved and moved their studio and offices to the Running Rebels Building and Fond du Lac on 14th Street, but on a deeper level, it was about dance, Drumming, painting and singing can change patterns of trauma response on a physical, emotional and mental level,” said Lori Vance, Founder and Executive Director of EXYOMKE. .
“EXYO has always worked to bridge young people from challenges to opportunities. Healing comes when we engage in creative activities. Barriers are being torn down, things are moving, and the true talents within each of us can shine through.
“This year’s multi-faceted MOVE IT! Our show MOVE IT! takes the audience on a journey that celebrates what happens when we MOVE IT together!”
David Wake, music director of Express Yourself Milwaukee and founder of De La Buena, added: I am so proud to witness again and again how desperate tales of division and disenfranchisement give way to real examples of solidarity through the healing power of art. ”
The show is free and open to everyone, but donations are accepted and definitely encouraged.
