At least 38 people were killed and dozens injured when two buses collided near the town of Kafrin in central Senegal on Sunday.according to the President and the Fire Department.
Following a “serious” accident, President Mackey Sall has announced three days of nationwide mourning starting Monday.
In a tweet on Sunday, he also said, 40 dead, ‘severely injured’.
“We sincerely apologize for the tragic traffic accident.” he said on Twitter.
“I would like to express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
A Senegalese prosecutor said in a separate statement that 38 people had died.
Prosecutor Sheikh Dien said early investigations suggested when the accident occurred. “A bus assigned to passenger public transportation left the track following a burst tire before colliding head-on with another bus coming in the opposite direction.”
Colonel Sheikh Fall, who is in charge of operations for the West African National Fire Brigade, said: He previously told AFP that 38 people were killed and 87 injured in the accident.
The accident occurred at around 3:15 am local time (0315 GMT), Faure told AFP, adding that all victims were evacuated to a hospital and medical center in Coughlin.
The wreckage and destroyed bus were then removed and normal traffic resumed on the road, he said.
The governor and local officials have already visited the scene, he added.
President Sall said after a period of national mourning ended: Government Council will be held “Take measures for traffic safety”.
Experts say road accidents are common in Senegal and the main culprits are undisciplined drivers, poor roads and aging vehicles.

At least 16 people were killed and 15 injured when a bus collided with a refrigerated truck in western Senegal in October 2020.
The bus carried 60 people and was headed for Rosso, near the border with Mauritania, firefighters said, adding that the number of passengers was unknown.
Local media reported at the time that trucks were carrying fish to Dakar.
