The Amajig, also known as the Berbers, celebrate the New Year in North Africa.
In Morocco’s capital Rabat, people took to the streets on Friday to celebrate the holiday, also known as Jenaiyah.
They dressed in traditional costumes and prepared Amazigh cuisine while a theater company performed in celebration of the year 2973 of the Amazigh calendar.
“Happy New Year to all Berbers. We gather in front of parliament to celebrate this New Year so that we can deliver our message. We ask that you consider it a national holiday. This is a request of the people of Amazigh, which is nothing new,” said one of the participants.
Many have called for the Moroccan government to recognize the holiday as official, as in neighboring Algeria.
A word meaning proud and free people who were marginalized in the past, Amajig is an important component of Moroccan society.
Their language was recognized as an official language alongside Arabic in the 2011 constitution, which was recognized by the king of Morocco in the wake of the Arab Spring.
