BROOKFIELD, Wisconsin — Thousands of Wisconsiners had the chance to learn about northern fishing lodges at this weekend’s All Canada Show.
The show has resumed after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The show has been running for 40 years and is a place for Canadian lodges to promote their hunting and fishing opportunities.
Jeff Morrow, manager of Temple Bay Lodge in northwestern Ontario, has been attending the exposition for nearly 15 years. He’s happily back after the pandemic put the show on hold. The pandemic has had a huge impact on Canadian tourism.
“Every lodge out there that I know of has 99.9% of their traffic based in the US, so it’s hurt every lodge,” Morrow said. We had to get really creative or find another job, so we had to get really creative.”
Canada’s borders have returned to normal restrictions on entry from the United States, but tourists are slowly returning to pre-pandemic numbers.
“I think people are probably down 40%,” Morrow said.
The All-Canada Show’s current owner, Scott Poutz, has been attending for ten years. He said he has toured in Milwaukee, Green Bay and Chicago.
“The old owners were interested in fishing and hunting in Canada and were interested in bringing all these lodges to U.S. residents, and that was the start,” says Poutz.
He hopes the show will continue to be a middle ground for U.S. residents to visit Canada and learn more about exploring what Canada has to offer.
