MILWAUKEE—Multiple agencies are working to keep a sunken tow ship in Milwaukee Harbor.
The U.S. Coast Guard said the towship Michigan began sinking in the port of Milwaukee on Monday. Coast Guard Sector Her Lake Michigan watchdog was notified by the National Response Center that a tow vessel she sank in 26 feet of water, according to the Coast Guard.
Crew members from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Port of Milwaukee, and the U.S. Coast Guard are working hard to get water off the ship in the hope that it will become self-buoyant again.
The Coast Guard said the boat carried a potential fuel load of up to 40,000 gallons of oil and fuel. As of Wednesday, the Coast Guard said there was no pollution from the boat and safety measures were in place for containment.
“It deployed booms, deployed sorbents to make sure any contamination was contained,” said Coast Guard LTJG Phillip Gurtler. “It was at the forefront of our minds when we were doing the dehydration and rescue.”
The next step is to keep the water down and send a diving team to check the boat for damage.
