GREENDALE, Wisconsin — It’s giving season and the Red Cross is asking for more donations after hundreds of cancellations this holiday season.
After winter weather halted blood drives across the United States and Wisconsin, the Red Cross hopes to make up for the hundreds of lost units by the new year.
On Tuesday, the Red Cross hosted a blood drive at Southridge Mall in Greendale. The lack of heating in the original location in the mall caused a delay of almost three hours, and the Red Cross had to move operations across the hall to another vacant location to make up for lost time. I did.
Several blood donations were canceled in Wisconsin last week due to weather, and time was lost.
“Blizzards, frigid cold. We’ve had about 800+ cancellations due to the weather here in our area,” said Red Cross account manager Lizzie Payant.
This means fewer blood donations, which the Red Cross hoped to supply local hospitals during this time. Randi Shaver is from Racine and has been donating her blood since she was 17. She came to donate her blood on her Tuesday in her honor to her loved ones.

To her, donating blood is personal, and she knows it helps those in need, especially during this time.
“We actually time our donations to make sure we donate on this day each year,” Shaver said.
Ms. Shaver was able to get the children to buy her side while she was donating so she could share with them the importance of giving back and donating blood.
Meanwhile, with all the recent cancellations, the Red Cross is calling for more donations as Tuesday’s donations have fallen behind well over 800 units of blood.
“Considering that every blood donation can result in three lives, this is a huge impact and there is no substitute for it,” said Payant.
The Red Cross hopes that many people will be fulfilled by donating blood during the blood donation season.
