TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – An abandoned warehouse on Elm Street in Toledo has been a problem for the Toledo community for decades.
The warehouse’s troubles began in 2009 when 20-year-old Cindy Sumner was found dead inside. Since then, squatters, adults and neighborhood children have taken over the warehouse, worrying the neighbors.
Neighbors recently reported children throwing large stones from an abandoned building. According to neighbors, these children are damaging tow trucks and cars parked at the tow truck business across the street.
Tow truck business owner Mar Ulchi said the children had caused so much damage that he had to pay the price.
“I think it was $4,000 a month or so ago, and four trucks this year are probably $2 to $3,000 more. I’m here.
He thinks this is an issue that doesn’t need to be addressed as the city has been saying for years to demolish the land.
“Several dead bodies were found in the past, so the building should have been demolished. And it’s hard to tell if there are homeless people living there and everything is there.” No one entered and the police were afraid to enter the building,” Ulchi said.
Ulchi said he had made numerous calls to the city and the land bank, all to no avail.
“They advised us to call the mayor, but you can’t get in touch with the mayor. So what are police stations for?” says Ulch.
Unlike many properties in the city, this demolition is in the hands of the Land Bank rather than the Demolition Department. Land Bank president and CEO David Mann said environmental work to remove the asbestos will take place next week and the building will soon be headed for a wrecking ball.
