(WTOK) – 2022 has seen a lot of excitement on the fields and courts in East Mississippi and West Alabama. Here’s a look back at some of the best moments.
January:
To welcome the New Year, a milestone was created in the Queen City. Local runner Evelyn Watkins completed his 100th marathon and crossed the finish line for the 100th time on the Great Scorpion Trail Run.
February:
It didn’t take long for the champion to be crowned in February.
The EMCC men’s basketball team upset second-seeded Northwest to head for the championship, defeating Itawamba to win the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament.
West Alabama was able to win the regular season GSC Championship title and anchor the NCAA DII Regionals.
march:
March brought more banners and confetti.
10 local teams earned tickets to the Big House and 4 of them won.
The Neshoba Central women’s team closed out a perfect 33-0 season with a 49-41 victory over Columbus. Choctaw Central won another title and Meridian Girls defeated Harrison Central to take home their first championship.
The Jackson State Women’s Basketball Team has earned tickets to the March Madness Tournament.
April:
April was a tough month for the Clarkdale community. A tornado hits the town, destroying the Lady Bulldogs’ softball facility but bringing them together. Team and community members came out to help Clarkdale finish the season and clean up.
Quitman Baseball, which turned the page as a new show this year, headed into the postseason for the first time in eight years.
June:
The summer months were the best months for Mississippi.
Southern Miss was able to host the first super-regional in program history and hosted Ole Miss.
But it was the Rebels who heated up in June, hitting their ticket to Omaha. The last team to enter achieved the impossible and won the national championship.First time in program history
July:
A dream come true for the Diamond Dreams organization when Mississippi Gatorade Softball Player of the Year, Tenley Grisham, awarded the organization a $10,000 grant.
Meridian’s Phil Harden-Cal-Ripken All-Stars advanced to the Southwest region of Arkansas to represent the Queen City on the big stage.
August:
Golden Eagle fans mourned the passing of legendary coach Corky Palmer in August.
A new football season kicked off in Eastern Mississippi and Western Alabama, bringing upsets and thrillers all year round.
September:
A rocky start to the college football season. Alabama vs Texas. He was 20-19 for the Crimson Tide who avoided that upset.
The Clarkdale football team started the season undefeated for the second year in a row.
October:
Union was scheduled for October.
The Yellowjackets volleyball team went undefeated in their division, won the district, and advanced to Round 2 of the MHSAA Playoffs.
The football team won the district championship with a walk-off field goal for the first time since 2013.
The impact of Coach Prime Time has finally been noticed and College GameDay has taken action. The ESPN crew visited Jackson for the first time in show history as JSU beat Southern 35-0.
November:
Championship November capped off with the Lions upset the Northwest in the MACCC Championship to win their eighth Football Conference Championship.
The Quitman Panthers advanced to Round 3 of the MHSAA playoffs, but fell short of the semifinals.
Mississippi State won the Egg Bowl for the first time in two years by defeating Ole Miss 24-22.
December:
Jackson State entered the SWAC Championship 11-0 and came out as the winners heading into the Celebration Bowl.
Deion Sanders has announced that he intends to end his deal with the Tigers before heading to Colorado to become the new head coach.
Mississippi, Ole Miss, Alabama and Southern Miss all got tickets to the bowl game.
Southern Miss Frank Gore Jr. ran for an NCAA Bowl record total of 329 yards, defeating Rice 38-24 to finish his second year of the Will Hall era 7-6.
December also brought grief as the sports world mourned the death of Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach.
2022 was a year of trophies and championships, losses on and off the field, but most importantly, Magnolia State was recognized again. Well, this year proved that there are no limits.
