Browse a curated selection of must-read books by Black authors at reader advice presentations in the library’s community room. The Milwaukee Public Library hosts other Black History Month events and programs throughout the month. These include competitive reading challenges, book clubs, crafts and documentary screenings.

Every month, everywhere
Milwaukee Films is gearing up for its fifth annual Black History Month program. Milwaukee Film’s Black Lens program is a month-long series of film screenings and live events that shine a spotlight on Black culture, history and experiences.

African Stars, Stories and Rhythms
UW-Milwaukee Manfred Olson Planetarium, 1900 E Kenwood Blvd. #139
Thursday, February 9, 6-8pm
At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Planetarium, you can celebrate Black History Month under the stars with “The Stars, Stories, and Rhythms of Africa.” Free events feature indoor stargazing, dancing, music, and storytelling.
Throughout February, the planetarium also hosts three nights of indoor stargazing entitled ‘Under the African Sky’, with a different guest speaker each night. The price for the event on February 8th, 15th and 22nd is he $6 per person.

Madison
Conversation with Tyler James Williams

Tuesday, February 21, 7-8:30pm, doors open at 6:30pm
NAACP Image and Golden Globe Award-winning actor Tyler James Williams is heading to the University of Wisconsin-Madison to speak, thanks to the university’s Black History Month planning committee. An audience question-and-answer session follows his talk, which is free and open to the public. Williams is best known for playing Gregory on the ABC series ‘Abbott Elementary’ and for playing Chris on ‘Everybody Hates Chris’. He also worked on films like ‘Let it Shine’, ‘Dear White People’ and ‘The United States vs. Billie Holiday’.

Rework Tuesday: The Mask of Lois Myrow Jones
Meadowridge Library, 5726 Raymond Rd.
Tuesday, February 21, 4:30-6:30 p.m.
The children’s area at Meadowridge Library hosts an afternoon of arts, crafts, tinkering and fun. This children’s activity celebrates Black History Month by teaching children about renowned artist Lois Myrow Jones. Children use oil pastels to make Jones-style masks. All materials are provided by the library.

End Black History Month with inspiration. Three poets lead an “emotional and experiential journey through a shared art form.” Spoken word events are meant to motivate audiences to pursue their dreams.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will host a variety of public events throughout the month to celebrate Black History Month. Get a taste of what the February 1st program will look like. Throughout the month, listen to spoken word performances, watch movie screenings, enjoy sporting events, have deep conversations at luncheons, learn something at lectures, sample delicious food, check out or mobile museum. There are many ways to honor the Black Wisconsinites on the UW-Green Bay campus. Many events are free.

The Appleton Area School District hosts a roller skating night.
“We look back at a time when black roller skating rinks were a popular pastime during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Roller skating provided an outlet for black individuals to skate freely despite discrimination. Now, let’s enjoy a wonderful “Soul Night” at BIPOC. Caucus,” said the BIPOC Caucus.

Black History Month – Community Celebration

Local boys and girls clubs work with other community organizations to “enable groups of 10 to 12 students to plan and conduct this community event that celebrates black history and black culture.” Free events include entertainment, contests, games, family portraits, guest speakers and prizes. Community resources are also available.

Black Legacy Art Show

The art show showcases the work of 15 local artists and is available for event attendees to purchase for themselves. This his 21+ event features live music and drinks. Proceeds and donations from the art show will go to La Crosse-based non-profit organizations HOPE RESTORES and the Black Leaders Acquiring Collective Knowledge.

This youth-focused event is aimed at ages 12-17. Teenagers can also participate if they are enrolled in school. Runaway Homeless Youth Mediation Emergency Services provides community meals, desserts, activities and movies.

The Black Students Alliance at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host its second annual Black Experience in hopes of elevating Black voices and providing its community with an “Experience of Black Excellence.” The event, which is open to the public, features unique vendors, cultural expressions, and foods important to “black identity.” UW-Eau Claire hosts other black history events open to the public throughout the month.
