Cloud gaming, virtual reality labs, video conferencing, video surveillance, analytics, and remote assistance work well using 5G standalone technology.
Globe Telecom Inc. showed these in a recent live demonstration, the phone company announced Monday, Jan. 9.
5G standalone relies solely on 5G connectivity, an upgrade to 5G non-standalone that continues to use 4G/Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks.
According to Globe, the technology has shown “tremendous potential” to transform business operations and improve efficiency, performance and flexibility.
5G Standalone offers faster download and upload speeds, improved connectivity, and the ability to support new technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), virtual reality, and augmented reality.
With cloud gaming, you store or host your game in the cloud and stream it on your device.
A virtual reality lab provides an immersive experience that allows users to be in the physical and virtual worlds at the same time.
Video conferencing over 5G standalone, on the other hand, will enable live video calls that are captured, transmitted, and delivered using ultra-high definition resolution.
Video surveillance analytics leverages existing video surveillance infrastructure to enhance security, automate access control, and collect data on customer behavior.
Remote Assistance allows businesses to use augmented reality technology to collaborate and provide guidance in real time in different locations.
“Experiencing 5G will be a new wave of communication,” said Gerhard Tan, Globe Director and Head of Network Strategy and Technology Enablement.
“Unleash the full power of digital solutions and enable applications directly from the palm of your hand,” he explained. “This will result in a differentiated service tailored to customer needs.”
5G Standalone also introduces the concept of network slicing. It virtually divides the network into multiple logical networks running on a shared physical network infrastructure.
This allows Globe to allocate resources to specific “slices” of the network to ensure quality, security, reliability and performance for specific services or use cases.
During testing, Globe configured four network slices end-to-end and allocated dedicated quality of service and bandwidth.
We have also completed testing and verification of the configured bandwidth, and one particular slice yielded speed test results of up to 200Mbps for download and up to 100Mbps for upload.
This technology offers new and improved services tailored to specific customer demands and opens up new opportunities for businesses in various industries.
