A sports sampling program that runs camps across the country, called 2-4-1 Sports, brought a fencing program to Hartford.
“We try to hit each other’s bellies this way,” said Yamilet, a senior at Breakthrough Magnet School South.
2-4-1 Sports works with Hartford’s Breakthrough Magnet School, thanks to a district-wide equity and innovation grant program.
2-4-1 Sports Chief Operating Officer Kelly Boyle said, “This is our first fencing program and it’s been so exciting to see the kids going crazy.
Breakthrough Magnet School South Grade 4 Tristan Brown said:
Malcolm Goodwin, a fourth-grader, adds, “I love fencing because when I was little, I always read books about sword fighting. When I’m fencing, it’s like I’m actually doing it.” I was.
2-4-1 Sport also includes a social and emotional component that teaches physical and mental skills.
“We start each program with that, so they kind of have a foundation,” Boyle said.
Holly Gustafson, Principal of Breakthrough Magnet School South, said, “We are all trying to teach our children these skills, life skills and leadership skills, with the same goal of being a good person and having a good character. We are working towards.
Each session ends with a shoutout, a way to spread positive opinions.
“Everywhere we go, there are kids in need. There are kids with devices, and there are kids who are afraid to try anything. Let them try things they might not try the other way,” said Stephen Boyle, executive director of 2-4-1 Sports.
“It helps my reflexes and footwork,” Brown said.
“It helps you make new friends. It’s a really great program,” said Goodwin.
2-4-1 Sports says it aims to lower the barriers to entry and participation costs. They added that they hope to expand the fencing program to other schools and communities so they can serve more children.
