The Blackhawks beat the Calgary Flames 5-1 at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Thursday.
Here are 10 observations from Victory.
1. Blackhawks captain Jonathan Towes was late due to a non-coronavirus illness. It’s the second time he’s been out of action this season due to illness. The Blackhawks were shut out by New Jersey in his 3–0 win on December 6, the first game in Touse’s absence, but this time it was much different.
2. Over the previous three games, the Blackhawks had 18, 19 and 14 total shots respectively. In this game, the Blackhawks recorded his 10 shooting (29 total) in the first period alone, scoring his 10th first goal in the last 13 games. They probably want to redo their last moments, but they needed a start like that.
3. The Flames trailed 1-1 with 28 seconds left in the first period. It was just 1:45 after Chicago joined the board. Those late goals have been a common theme for the Blackhawks this season. This is the ninth time this season that he has conceded a goal within two minutes of the opening goal. Not ideal.
Four. The game turned into the second period and the Blackhawks scored three unanswered goals, including two goals in 32 seconds. The flames didn’t look like themselves. It was a sleepy start for them and didn’t look very good even in the middle frames.
Five. The Blackhawks took goals from every line and all 11 forwards scored points, with the exception of Reece Johnson. Depth scoring is the main reason why they have won 7 of their last 10 games.
6. How did Boris Kachok take advantage of being back in the lineup for the first time since January 3 after being scratched in nine games in a row? It was his second of the season and also his career high. It had to feel good. 4 His line was great overall and I think that’s enough to keep him in the rotation against Edmonton on Saturday.
7. Colin Blackwell had his best game of the season and was rightfully able to score a hat-trick. Hit the post in a period. He set up Sam Lafferty for a great goal, so at least he got his first assist. You must be skeptical. Let’s see all the emotions he felt:
8. I thought Patrick Kane had a really solid match. It was highlighted by Kachuk’s zoning his entry into the goal and his two backhands his saucer pass. Vintage 88.
9. Jackson Stauber started the NHL for the second time in his career, saving 34 of 35 shots for a . 971 save percentage and another victory. He is the first Blackhawks goalie to make his two starts since Jill Meloche in 1971.
Ten. Taylor Radish has scored his 13th goal of the season. This is his tie for second place on the team, behind Max Domi (14) for first place. At the beginning of the season, I picked Raddish as his breakout player and from him he predicted a 25-goal, 45-point campaign potential. He’s on pace with his 22 goals and 37 points.
